About the Department:
Biotechnology is the new buzz word in the scientific world. As a multidisciplinary applied science and technology, Biotechnology is an amalgam of Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Bioprocess Engineering, Tissue Culture Technology, Molecular Biology and Recombination DNA Technology. This field of knowledge aims at transforming biological inputs into commercial outputs. Bioinformatics has a key role to play in the cutting edge Research and Development areas such as functional genomics, proteomics, protein engineering, metabolic pathway engineering, discoveries of new drugs and vaccines, molecular diagnostic kits and agro-biotechnology etc. This has attracted attention of several companies and entrepreneurs. The immense development in these two fields has necessitated the availability of large number of formally trained individuals in Biotechnology & Bioinformatics.
Department of Biotechnology was established at this university in the year 2004 with an intake of 30 students in the B.Tech programme which was increased to 60 from the session 2010. To give an impetus to research in the emerging areas of biotechnology, Ph.D. programme was initiated in 2009 & subsequently M.Tech (Biotechnology) programme was introduced in 2010 with an initial strength of 18 students. M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes are aimed at encouraging the pursuit of excellence in advanced teaching and research and to generate trained manpower with great scientific orientation and excellent technical skills in the field of biotechnology. The department has also started Master of Science in Biotechnology from the session 2011 with intake of 30 students. This programme would help in producing biotechnology professionals trained to tackle the emerging scientific challenges in the biological sciences by forging strong alliance between biological and computer sciences.
The department has highly qualified, experienced and committed faculty. The faculty is actively engaged in thrust areas of research in the field of genetic diversity, animal and plant biotechnology molecular & microbial biotechnology, enzyme technology, plant tissue culture, biosensors and bioprocess engineering.
The laboratories are well equipped to provide hands on experience to the students beside the normal curriculum. The Undergraduate and postgraduate students are provided an opportunity to do a research project which helps them to handle independent projects in academia and industry.
MISSION AND GUIDING VALUES of the Department
The department of Biotechnology was started in 2004 with B.Tech Programme in Biotechnology. Annually, 30 students are admitted in B.Tech. Biotechnology programme. The departments has also started M.Tech in Biotechnolgy from the academic session 2010-11 with an intake of 18 students. The department is also offering Ph.D programme in Biotechnology since 2009-10. The department has highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members with specialization in various fields of biotechnology. The laboratories are well equipped with all the modern instruments and facilities to provide high end research in different specializations of biotechnology.
MISSION AND GUIDING VALUES
- Educate students for technical competence and knowledge management in different areas of Biotechnology.
- Promote scientific capacity building among students and teachers in different specializations of Biotechnology.
- Motivate students towards entrepreneurship for better competence in the market.
